Born in upstate NY, Carlos grew up in Ecuador, then moved back to the US after High School. After getting a degree in Aerospace Engineering and an MBA, Carlos started his career in investment banking. He also got involved with a variety of start-up ventures in various industries all over the world. He is currently at a boutique investment bank that he co-founded in 2000, while enjoying life in Reston, VA with his 2 daughters.

In his spare time, Carlos enjoys mountaineering, competing in marathons, ultramarathons, on- and off-road triathlons, rucking, and obstacle and adventure races. He is also a classically trained guitarist who has recently stepped into music production.

His fascination with wine from an early age has only grown and he enjoys constantly learning more about all aspects of wines, their production, and their enjoyment. Starting Topografia in 2007 gave him the perfect vehicle to dive into the wine world by producing his own wines. He’s very proud of his wines, which have garnered various accolades and stellar reviews—but most importantly, he loves being able to share them with friends.

about topografia

From “something is missing” to international awards…

Back in 2007, I had built up a great life, but something was missing. It was time for more exploration and inspiration. It was at this point that I sought to bring some adventure and creativity to my life and so I followed my passion to create the best wine that I possibly could.

When I first got to the site of the vineyard in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina, there was nothing but raw land, scrub brush and rocks on the ground.

We started Topografia and planted the vineyard with the goal of making the best wines possible. But after having started from zero, I was pretty blown away by what happened next.

After almost 15 years since we planted the first vines, our wines are receiving international recognition and awards. More importantly, I am enjoying drinking and sharing these great wines! This startup journey has already been an adventure of a lifetime.

The vineyard, (named “Kilombo GS”), consists of 5 acres located in the truly privileged environment of the Chacayes region of the Uco Valley in Mendoza. It enjoys unique natural conditions contributing to the production of excellent grapes that result in consistently excellent wines.

The vineyard is located at an elevation of 1,050 meters above sea level and is composed of dry loamy soil. It was planted in November of 2007, with 2.5 acres dedicated to Cabernet Franc, 1.5 acres to Malbec, and 1 acre to Petit Verdot. All of the grapes used for our wines are farmed using organic and sustainable practices.

The grapes grown on this vineyard are used to produce and bottle primarily Malbec-based super premium red blends, but also Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot varietals depending on the quality and characteristics of the grapes each year.

In 2018, Topografia also took a big step forward, and we’ve started producing wines in Europe, as described below.

WHERE WE PRODUCE

Topografia originally produced wines exclusively with grapes from the vineyard in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina. Over the last couple of years, though, we’ve also started producing wines in other iconic wine regions with celebrated winemaking partners. Some of our newest wines that have just been introduced or are in production are:

  • Torrontés from Mendoza, Argentina, with winemaker Pablo Martorell at The Vines of Mendoza

  • Super Tuscans from Tuscany, Italy, with winemaker Roberto Cipresso at Wine Circus

  • Champagne from Champagne, France, with winemaker Michel Drappier at Champagne Drappier

  • Rieslings from Mosel, Germany, with winemaker Erni Loosen at Dr. Loosen

  • Priorat from Priorat, Spain, with winemaker Dominik Huber at Terroir al Limit
